First of all, I should introduce myself. My name is Steve Parton, I am the new Subject Librarian for the Media School, here at Bournemouth University. You may be aware that Matt has moved on, having relocated to a different part of the country. I am excited to be carrying on the fantastic work he did, including contributing to this blog.

For my first post, I thought I’d provide a link to conference paper Profesor Sean Street and Matt Holland submitted back in April on the LBC Independent Radio News Archive.

The Centre for Broadcasting History Research, hosted a series of six public talks on broadcasting themes at the Study Galleryin Poole. Two of the talks were on topics relating to Independent Radio. Tony Stoller, former Chief Executive of The Radio Authority talked about relationship between Independent Radio and the music industry(see link to Emma Wray’s talk below).  The text of Tony’s talk is now available. Those who attended the original presentation were able to experience the full version with musical clips cued in. In this version the clips are referenced in the text only.

Independent Radio Comes to Dorset

Prof. Sean Street (Bournemouth University), Stanley Peters (Project Manger for LBC/IRN Project – Bournemouth University) and David Lee (Director of the Wessex Film and Sound Archive) will be presenting papers on the ILR and LBC/IRN projects at the next BISA training day on Friday 5 June 2009.

The three independent radio databases are now released in a test version. You can search them at radio.bufvc.ac.uk.

ILR Sharing and ILR South are complete. New material will be periodically uploaded to LBC/IRN over the next six months.

You can find out more about each project by looking at pages About and the FAQ’s on each project web page.

Access to these databases is free, however, if you want to listen to the audio you will need to login with an ATHENS Account.

The LBC/IRN also has a specially written Case Study which provides an overview of LBC/IRN and is a useful route into the database.

Following a previous post on Advertising on Radio 4, the presenter of the programme, Brian Hayes, now has a blog in which he talks about the programme and independent radio advertising.

Unlocking Audio conference 2007 presentations are available online. The most recent conference, Unlocking Audio 2 (March 16 – 17) has just finished. Professor Sean Street presented a paper about the three Independent Local Radio digitisation projects that will launch at the end of March 2009. Linked to the Unlocking Audio conference is a social networking site – Resources for studying sound recordings.

BBC Radio 4’s Archive Hour – 15 March 2009 – broadcast a programme on radio advertising on independent local radio. The programme was presented by Brian Hayes who also presented on the London Broadcasting Company [LBC]. One of Brian’s programmes, Hayes on Sunday, forms part of the LBC / IRN Digitisation Project. Among the many contributors to the programme was Prof. Sean Street who leads the LBC /IRN project. You can hear the programme for a short period on the BBC Radio 4’s  website.

The LBC/IRN Digitisation Project has passed a number of milestones.  The database and interface are in beta versions, and is populated with the first batch of digitised, edited and catalogued audio, currently over 7000 items. A public verion will be released at the end of March 2009.    The database contains audio of a number of  LBC/IRN  (near) firsts.

• Jon Snow reporting live from the end of the Balcombe Street siege, for the first time on radio using a radio car phone
• A very early phone-in Open Line(1973/74) with George Gale. While certainly not a ’shock jock’ George Gale is surprisingly direct with callers to the programme  
• First broadcast of LBC, a morning news programme  introduced by David Jessel, and included in the programme the first advertisements broadcast on Independent radio
• The first live broadcast from the House of Commons
• A very early recording of Hayes on Sunday (1976) with Brian Hayes hosting a phone-in with Leader of the Opposition Margaret Thatcher.

Colleagues working on the LBC / IRN Digitisation Project, have acquired an in depth knowledge of the subject, because of their own skills in research and because a lot of the cataloguing work has required additional investigation to verify, for example, the spellings of names (see post What’s in a name?). Included here is LBC / IRN a short bibliography of key articles, created by one of the Digitisation Project Team, Robert Ford.

Also included is a bibliography of articles about radio in the IBA journal Independent Broadcasting which as published quarterly from the 1 August 1974 to 40 September 1984 and superseded by Airwaves 1984 – 1990 (discussed in a previous post).
