My name is Steve Parton, I am the new Subject Librarian for the Media School, here at Bournemouth University. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>The <a href="http://media.bournemouth.ac.uk/research/cbhr.html">Centre for Broadcasting History Research</a>, hosted a series of six public talks on broadcasting themes at the <a href="http://www.thestudygallery.org/">Study Gallery</a>in Poole. Two of the talks were on topics relating to Independent Radio. Tony Stoller, former Chief Executive of The Radio Authority talked about relationship between Independent Radio and the music industry(see link to Emma Wray&#8217;s talk below).  The text of Tony&#8217;s <a href="http://independentradio.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/music_radio_lecture_text_12_2_09.doc">talk</a> is now available. Those who attended the original presentation were able to experience the full version with musical clips cued in. In this version the clips are referenced in the text only.</p>

<p>ILR Sharing and ILR South are complete. New material will be periodically uploaded to LBC/IRN over the next six months.</p>
<p>You can find out more about each project by looking at pages About and the FAQ&#8217;s on each project web page.</p>
<p>Access to these databases is free, however, if you want to listen to the audio you will need to login with an ATHENS Account. </p>
<p>The LBC/IRN also has a specially written <a href="http://radio.bufvc.ac.uk/lbc/index.php/casestudy">Case Study</a> which provides an overview of LBC/IRN and is a useful route into the database.</p>

The most recent conference, <a href="http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/bldept/soundarch/unlockaudio/unlockingaudio.html">Unlocking Audio 2</a> (March 16 &#8211; 17) has just finished. Professor Sean Street presented a paper about the three Independent Local Radio digitisation projects that will launch at the end of March 2009. Linked to the Unlocking Audio conference is a social networking site &#8211; <a href="http://soundresources.ning.com/">Resources for studying sound recordings</a>.</p>

A public verion will be released at the end of March 2009.    The database contains audio of a number of  LBC/IRN  (near) firsts.

<li>A very early phone-in <em>Open Line</em>(1973/74) with George Gale. While certainly not a &#8217;shock jock&#8217; George Gale is surprisingly direct with callers to the programme  </li>
<li>First broadcast of LBC, a morning news programme  introduced by David Jessel, and included in the programme the first <span lang="EN-GB">advertisements</span> broadcast on Independent radio</li>
<li>The first live broadcast from the House of Commons</li>
<li>A very early recording of <em>Hayes on Sunday</em> (1976) with Brian Hayes hosting a phone-in with Leader of the Opposition Margaret Thatcher.</li>
